Employment
On-Campus Employment - Students on the F-1 visa may work on-campus without any special work authorization for up to 20 hours/week when classes are in session and up to 40 hours/week during vacations and breaks
Curricular Practical Training - Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a benefit of the F visa status that is meant to serve as a continuation of the student’s program of study in a work environment.
Optional Practical Training - OPT is a benefit of the F visa status. OPT provides students with 12 months to pursue full-time employment in their field of academic study. OPT can be pursued pre and/or post graduation. Applications must be submitted to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services for approval, a process that can take 2-3 months. An offer of employment is not required.
J-1 Academic Training - Academic Training is a benefit of the J visa status that is meant to serve as a continuation of the student’s program of study in a work environment.
Social Security Number - A social security number (SSN) in the United States is used to track employment and credit history. The United States does not have a national ID number, therefore in some instances, the SSN has become a de-facto national ID number.
Social Security Letter - If you are an F-1 or J-1 student and have an offer of on-campus employment, please complete this form to request a letter from ISS to take with you to the Social Security Administration.

Reduced Course Load - F-1 students are eligible to request a Reduced Course Load (RCL) for the following reasons: Academic (first semester only), Medical, or Final Term.
Program Extension - If you will not complete your program of study due to an academic delay, you can request for your I-20 to be extended.
Transfer Out - If you are transferring to another school within the U.S, please submit this request so that the WFU Immigration Services and Support center (ISS) can initiate a transfer of your SEVIS record to your new school.
Leave of Absence Request - If you need to take a Leave of Absence from Wake Forest University for academic or personal reasons, you must request approval from the WFU Immigration Services and Support center (ISS).
Change of Education Level - If you are changing to a higher education level, please submit this request so that the WFU Immigration Services and Support center (ISS) can issue you a new I-20. This request is also required for graduate students transitioning to a new degree program at the same level.
