Announcement: IMPORTANT REMINDER ABOUT SCAMS

Be mindful of more sophisticated scamming techniques targeting international students.
We don't want to unnecessarily scare students, but we DO want you to be aware. On numerous occasions, scammers have presented themselves to be officials of the U.S. government or legal representation, and these calls and emails seem legitimate because the scammers appear to be calling/emailing from 911 or various U.S. government agencies (USCIS, ICE, DHS, FBI, CIA, or IRS).

Remember, NO government agency or law firms will:
·  Demand payment over the phone and demand a specific type of payment.
·  Ask for your SSN, debit/credit card information over the phone.
·  Threaten arrest or deportation for non-payment.
·  Remain anonymous, they must disclose their badge information.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I GET A SUSPICIOUS EMAIL OR PHONE CALL?
Contact ISSS and Information Systems with a copy of the email or a transcript of the phone conversation. If you gave personal information or transferred money to the unknown person, you should also contact the University Police: 336-758-5911
If the scammer reached you online report them to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center

New Scam Alert
The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) has been made aware of a spoofing scam involving individuals using the SEVP Response Center (SRC) phone numbers (703-603-3400 and 800-892-4829) and claiming to be SRC representatives. The fraudulent callers are inquiring about Form I-94 documents and asking students to provide information regarding monetary transactions.
We are urging you to follow up with your international students to ensure they don’t fall victim to this dangerous scam. If you or one of your students encounter, or are a victim of this spoof call, you are encouraged to report the incident to the HSI tip line. If you are unsure about the validity of a call from an SEVP official, you can also reach out to your designated SEVP field representative.
